So I've ran into and issue with video playback on my PC.

So, I've had this issue for like a week or so, where whenever I try to watch a video on my computer, video playback freezes but audio continues to play. If the video is full screen and the freeze happens, when I change out of full screen, the video player shrinks back down, but the video itself stays full screen but gets cut off. Happens across multiple file types and video players, including Media Player Classic, QuickTime, and windows media player.

I found a different thread that said this could be a sign of an aging and dying HDD, so I tried playing the videos on all of my drives but I still got the same result.

I updated to the latest version of CCCP, but this didn't change anything.

Ran a virus scan. Nothing major showed up.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!

I just want to thank you guys for taking your time to give me some suggestions!

In the end, what I was able to figure out by doing a clean boot, is that Precision X was the problem program. It still ran when I did the clean boot and I noticed I still had the issue. Turning that off fixed the problem right up. Apparently there's a recent issue with the OSD interfering with programs even though the OSD is off.

So I uninstalled Precision X for now. Some users on the EVGA forums suggest either only running Precision X when you need it or making exceptions for the OSD to not run for certain programs, even when it is disabled in Precision X. Also, an EVGA tech says it should be taken care of in the next version.

I'm going to post some links explaining it better than me. Hopefully that's ok in case someone else has my same issue.

Thanks again for your time!

(I can't select myself as the answer apparently. Idk if a mod can do it for me or just close this.)

If its any help, I ran the computer in safe mode with networking and was able to have a video play through its entire run time, about an hour, without freezing. That means its probably a software conflict, right?

Do games and video benchmarks cause this issue with locking up the video?
Did you try VLC video player?

I have noticed that my main daily game, Smite, has been crashing more than usual. I thought it was the game, so I did a fresh install but that didn't help. Arkham Knight has crashed a bit, but I figured that was due to the game itself. Haven't run a benchmark program since this problem has started.

Check event manager for Programs (it may be called Applications don't remember exact one), look for errors and warnings there and see where it's coming from. You are likely to see some user logon, WMI, maybe a few other things that is OK to ignore, watch for specific programs or things having to do with video or drivers.

I would try a live dvd of Linux and see if the issue is there in it as well - I don't guess its some kind of drm kicking in ?? I use vlc and 7 and I see no issues with it at all for what I look at or use it for ?? [ vlc has a Linux client if needed ]

also try another driver for your card it could be a issue there as well ? you may get to wonder if something is missing or corrupted or what ever from this part of your cards driver package ??

also I see in the drivers foot notes about flash player needs to be the latest ?? ''Application Issues-- 1080p video content stutters during browser playback in full-screen mode.
The issue is resolved with Flash 11.0.1.83 and later.

sad thing is the latest driver states '' Windows 8.1/Windows 8/Windows 7/Windows Vista Fixed
Issues
 There were no fixed issues reported for this release.''
so going back to a older driver may not help

I googled '' GTX 980 video playback freezes '' seems a few experience this issue ??
